Resumen

El objetivo de este estudio fue monitorear los parámetros hematológicos de los emúes machos durante la incubación criados en cautiverio. Se examinaron dos emus machos, ya que son responsables de la incubación. Los parámetros hematológicos analizados incluyeron recuentos de eritrocitos, hematocritos, leucocitos totales, hemoglobina, MCHC, VCM y recuentos diferenciales de leucocitos (basófilos, heterófilos, linfocitos, monocitos y eosinófilos). Se observaron cambios hematológicos importantes durante la incubación en los niveles de hematócrito, VCM, hemoglobina, MCHC, Recuento total de leucocitos, heterófilos, linfocitos, monocitos y basófilos. No se observó daño fisiológico severo, como anemia, deshidratación o depresión inmune, a pesar de que los animales ingirieron cantidades mínimas de alimento y agua. Esto sugiere que emúes machos se adaptan fisiológicamente a la hipobiosis durante la incubación. El análisis de los parámetros hematológicos y fisiológicos durante la hipobiosis en emúes machos es clínicamente relevante en la investigación de la especie. 

Abstract

The aims of this study were to monitor haematological parameters of male emus reared in captivity during incubation. Two male emus were examined, since they are responsible for incubation. Haematological parameters analysed included erythrocyte counts, haematocrit, total leukocytes, haemoglobin, MCHC, VCM, and differential leukocyte counts (basophils, heterophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and eosinophils. Important haematological changes were observed during incubation in haematocrit levels, VCM, haemoglobin, MCHC, total leukocyte counts, heterophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and basophil counts. No severe physiological damage was observed, such as anaemia, dehydration, or immune depletion, even though the animals ingested only minimal amounts of food and water. This suggests that male emus are physiologically adapted to hypobiosis during incubation. The analysis of haematological and physiological parameters during hypobiosis in male emus is clinically relevant in research on the species.
